This Gangarama temple is located in the Colombo district  of the western province  Sri Lanka, near the beire lake in the city of Colombo. Although not a huge temple  in terms of size, this Gangarama temple is one of the oldest temples in the Colombo district. A large number of local and foreign tourists come to visit this temple for both the purpose of worshiping and the beauty of the place. The architecture of the temple and some elements of the temple are built on the surface of the lake and tourists are of the opinion that it further enhances the beauty of the temple.

There are many temples in the city of Colombo. This Gangarama temple can be described as a special temple among those temples. This temple is located near lake beire in Colombo. In the late 19th century, the land on which the present temple is built was purchased with the money of Mr.Don bastion. The temple was established by Hikkaduwe sri sumangala thero, a famous monk in Sri Lanka at that time. The bodhi tree in this Gangarama temple is a sapling of the Sri maha bodi tree in Anuradapura. The architecture of the temple is the one of main factors that enhances  the beauty of the temple .Sri Lankan, Indian, Thai and Chinese architectural styles can be seen in this temple. Another special feature is that several elements of the temple have been built on the surface of the lake beira .Among those elements  the simamalaka shine occupies a special place. Simamalala shine was built by the the famous architect jeffrey bawa. The Gangarama temple is very beautiful  at night  and is decorated with light bulbs of different colors. The gangarama temple is known as one of the oldest temples in city of Colombo. There is a library as well as a museum built in this temple. This gangarama temple  can be called a different temple from  other temples in Sri Lanka. Today, this gangarama temple is maintained  as a place of worship and a place of dhamma education. Foreign tourists love to see the beauty of this temple. The temple attracts a large number of local and foreign Buddhist as well non Buddhist tourists.
