This sacred Sri Maha Bodhi is located in the city of Anuradapura in Anuradapura district of the North central province of Sri Lanka. This Sri Maha bodhi can be described as the one of most sacred place of the Buddhist people all over world. This sacred Sri Maha Bodhi is one of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka. This Sri Maha Bodhi is a southern sapling of the  sacred Bodhi tree which provided shade when the Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. This Sri maha Bodhi is known as the oldest tree planted by human hands in history. People from Sri Lanka as well as foreign tourists come to see and worship to this sacred Sri Maha bodhi.

Sri Maha Bodhi is a southern sapling of the historical and sacred bodhi tree that provided shade for the enlightenment of the lord buddha at Buddhagaya, India. After the Mahindagamanaya in the 3rd century BC, Sri Lanka became a Buddhist country. King devanampiyathissa ruled Sri Lanka at that time.  King devanampiyathissa embraced Buddhism after Mahindagamanaya. Therefore, people were also motivated to embrace Buddhism. King devanampiyathissa informed the then king Dharmaashoka of India that people of Sri Lanka wanted to worship sacred objects and sacred relics of lord Buddha. Due to this request, Sri Maha bodhi was brought to  Sri Lanka with sangamiththa therani the daughter of the then king dharmaashoka of India. ancient text state that king Dharmaashoka sent craftsman from various fields such as architects to Sri Lanka with the Sri Maha Bodhi. This Sri Maha Bodhi was planted in Anuradapura in 259 BC king Devanampiyathissa .This Bodhi tree is said to be the oldest tree ever planted by a human hand in history. This Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradapura can be described as one of the most important and sacred places in Sri Lanka. In the past kings as well as monks protected this Sri Maha Bodhi. This Sri Maha Bodhi can be seen in a place surrounded by walls on the Ground 21 feet above the ground level. A golden fence has been erected for the protection of this Sri Maha Bodhi. It is not allowed to go near the place where this Sri Maha Bodhi is. There is also a 700 foot wall hear Daily poojas and special annual festivals are held for the Sri Maha Bodhi.
