This Sri Maha Bodhi was planted in Anuradapura in 259 BC king Devanampiyathissa .This Bodhi tree is said to be the oldest tree ever planted by a human hand in history. This Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradapura can be described as one of the most important and sacred places in Sri Lanka. In the past kings as well as monks protected this Sri Maha Bodhi. This Sri Maha Bodhi can be seen in a place surrounded by walls on the Ground 21 feet above the ground level. A golden fence has been erected for the protection of this Sri Maha Bodhi. It is not allowed to go near the place where this Sri Maha Bodhi is. There is also a 700 foot wall hear Daily poojas and special annual festivals are held for the Sri Maha Bodhi.
