Independence square is located in the Cinnomon gardens in the Colombo district of Sri Lanka. It was completed is 1953 after the independence of Sri Lanka on February 4, 1948.This Independence square highlights the long history and pride of Sri Lanka. There are also small lion statues made of stones and craving on stone pillars important events in Sri Lanka depicted in paintings. There is also a small museum here. This is another beautiful place that has attracted a larger number of tourists.

Prior to 1948, Sri Lanka was a colony of the British empire. In 1802 the British colonized Sri Lanka. Also, in 1815, Sri Lanka was a complete British colony. The British ruled Sri Lanka for more than 133 Years from 1815 to 1948.Following the implementation of the Independence act of Sri Lanka on February 4,1948, Sri Lanka became an independence state. That independence Act consisted of three main points. Abolition of British legislation in Sri Lanka. The parliament of Sri Lanka has the full right to legislation in Sri Lanka. Inability to enforce any law imposed by British without the approval of Government of Sri Lanka. His excellency D.S senanayaka, the first prime minister of Sri Lanka who contributed to the independence of Sri Lanka and the then parliament planned to construct a memorial building to symbolize the long and proud history of Sri Lanka. As a result, the foundation stone for the Independence square was laid on February 4,1949.0.9 acres of land has been used for the construction of this independence square. The ground floor area of the independence house is about 10,000 square feet Architect Tom neville vindjones contributed to the design and construction of this stunning building. Small lion statues are erected around this independence square. Important events in the history of Sri Lanka are depicted in the paintings in independence square. There are various carvings and statues can be seen throughout this independence square. among these statues is a statue of his excellency D.S senanayaka, the first prime minister of Sri Lanka. In 2008, the independence museum opened in independence square. In the early days ,the independence day celebration were held in this independence square premises. Later, the independence square was used for special events and celebrations. Maithree pala sirisena, the 6th executive president of Sri Lanka was sworn in at this independence square .A large number of local and foreign tourists come to see this independence square. Which is an ancient culture reflection of Sri Lanka in the fullest sense of the words.
