Temple of the sacred tooth relic can be called the most sacred place of the people of Sri Lanka. Temple of the sacred tooth relic is located in the city of Kandy in the Kandy district of Sri Lanka. The left tooth relic of the lord Buddha is now housed in this temple of the sacred tooth relic.1677-1707 king wimaladarma suriya built the temple of the sacred tooth relic. The moat and the paththirippuwa were built during the reign of king Sri wickremarajasinhe. This temple of the sacred tooth relic is a UNESCO world heritage site. Temple of the sacred tooth relic is a very ancient and sacred place.

Temple of the sacred tooth relic is the most sacred place for Sri Lankan Buddhists. The left tooth relic of the lord Buddha is placed in this temple. This temple of the sacred tooth relic was first built by king wimaladarma sooriya who reigned form 1692-1704.But after the Portuguese mad e Sri Lanka their colony in 1505,they destroyed the temple of the sacred tooth relic but the tooth relic survived, For a long time it was accepted by the people that in order to become a king, the custody of the sacred tooth relic must be in the hands of that king. This scared tooth relic symbolized the kingship and sovereignty of the country. therefore, the monks and kings who lived at that time protected these sacred tooth relic. The present day temple of sacred tooth relic was built by king Sri weera parakrama narendra sinhe who ruled form 1707-1739.The moat and the patthirippu were built by king Sri wickramarajasinhe. The sacred tooth relic of the lord Buddha was housed in the temple of the scared tooth relic and king also resided in this palace. So this is a palace. With the British rule, the Diyawadana nilame was entrusted with the custody of all the features of the temple of the scared tooth relic ,immovable and movable property. The post of diyawadana nilame is more that 200 years. It was a royal rank at that time, At present time a person is elected to this post by ballot. The current Diyawadana nilame is Pradeep nilanga dale bandara. The tenure of Diyawadana nilame is 10 years. The sacred tooth relic is housed inside seven golden caskets(not coffins) .Three special offerings are performed daily for this sacred tooth relic. These are the morning offering, the noon offering and the evening offering. There are special people as well as monks to perform these offerings. On Wednesdays, a special offering is held for the sacred tooth relic know as the "nanumura pooja", There have been four festivals held at the temple of the sacred tooth relic since ancient times. These are the New rice festival, The new year festival, Th esala festival and the "karthika" festival. The entire city of Kandy including the temple of the scared tooth relic has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. recently ,a three storied museum has been built on the premises of the temple of the scared tooth relic, Due to its historical significance, antiquity and beauty, The temple of the sacred tooth relic attracts a large number of local and foreign tourists
